‘Biltong’ is one of our specialities - commonly used as a snack or ‘padkos’ (road food).
It is salted, flavoured dried red meat. This traditional foodstuff originated during the early explorations of Africa when horse riders used to string meat under the saddles of their horses.
They did so because salt was a precious preservative and difficult to obtain so instead they used
the sweat from their horse and preserved the meat by drying it out in the sun. Nowadays
the tradition of biltong lives on in a process that is more sophisticated and while the thought of it may take you a while to get used to, once you’ve tasted biltong, you’ll be hooked. Biltong is the epitome of our attitude to business - making a plan when you have to, improvising where necessary and keeping costs down.
In South Africa, we say “ ‘n boer maak ‘n plan” which roughly translated means ‘a farmer makes a plan.’ That’s us
at DO Productions too.
